Damaged Hair

Is your hair damaged and dry?

Does your hair look dry and frazzled?  Do you have split ends? Suffering from damaged hair can leave you looking rundown and not feeling your best and we are here to help.

 What is Damaged Hair?

Damaged hair is the result of several factors - hair becomes brittle, dry and is easily broken.
This will require serious intervention - the trichologist can restore some lusture and strength back into the stressed tresses using reconstructurant treatments and formulating a nutrition plan, plus advice on future hair care and maintenance.

Heat damage - How does heat damage hair?

Heat Damaged Hair – (UV) sun rays, heated styling tools such as hairdryers and straighteners are the most common causes of damaged hair. Generally, chemically processed hair responds poorly to ultra-violet rays. Prolonged exposure to the sun causes damaged hair as it breaks down hair bonds and weakens the hair’s integrity.

Using curling irons, hair straighteners and hot hairdryers repeatedly over a long period of time will also contribute to damaged hair.

Advice– When using any heat styling tool an effective heat protector serum must be used prior to using the tool. Daily usage of hair dryers and hair straighteners is not recommended.

Chemical damage

Chemical damage is seen as the breakage of at re-growth where over-processing or over-lapping of bleach, relaxer or tint has occurred. This breakage can involve the whole scalp with the hair breaking for several weeks after the process.

During any chemical process, vital linkages (bonds) are broken within the hair in order for the colour or relaxing process to take place.  However, when the process is completed, the hair will still have some broken linkages (bonds) and this is where the weakening of the structure sees the hair breaking at certain points along the hair shaft, leaving it looking dull and feeling rough.

Physical damage

Physical damage can be caused to the hair by rough handling using excessive force to brush and comb hair (back-combing) or by using rough plastic bristles on the hair, causing trauma by fracturing hair strands.

Hair should be handled gently, especially when wet; using a wide toothed comb to de-tangle, combing from tips-to-roots.

Always use conditioner after shampooing to facilitate de-tangling.

Hairdryer should be used sparingly and on a warm to cool setting. Always use a heat barrier serum to protect your tresses.
