 What is Female Pattern Baldness?

Female Pattern Hair loss is a hair loss condition in women which begins with hair partings widening and a general thinning throughout the scalp which occurs over a period of time.

Female Hair Loss affects women of all ages

Female hair loss will commonly be expressed by wider partings, the scalp becoming more visible, thinning at front and crown areas of the scalp, but with hairline remaining intact. Also, the scalp may be very greasy.  Acne may also be present.

What happens when you have Female Pattern Baldness

At its core, FPHL involves a complex interplay between genetics, hormones, and aging. The primary mechanism is follicular miniaturisation—a process where robust, terminal hair follicles gradually shrink, producing finer, shorter hairs with each growth cycle until some cease production entirely.

Contrary to common belief, FPHL is not simply about having “too much testosterone.” Rather, it involves sensitivity to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone naturally present in women at low levels. In genetically predisposed individuals, the enzyme 5-alpha reductase converts testosterone to DHT, which binds to follicle receptors and triggers miniaturisation.

What Causes Female Pattern Baldness Hair Loss?

Female Pattern Hair Loss (FPHL) can occur at any age after puberty, although there are a range of common causes.

Female Pattern Hair Loss is caused by puberty, pregnancy and the menopause, sudden sensitivity to testosterone, inherited from maternal grandfather. Hair loss in women begins with hair partings widening and a general thinning throughout the scalp occurs over a period of time.

Women’s hair loss patterns differ fundamentally from men’s because of the protective effect of estrogen on hair follicles and different patterns of androgen receptor distribution in the scalp. This explains why FPHL often accelerates during menopause, when oestrogen levels decline, removing this protective buffer.

The hair loss treatments recommended at TrichoSynergy are formulated to stop and/or slow down hair loss in addition to stimulating hair growth.

How is Female Pattern Baldness treated?

A variety of treatments such as electrotherapy, phototherapy and Mesotherapy are used to encourage hair regrowth (where possible), SMP and hair restoration surgery will be discussed and considered during the consultation at TrichoSynergy to find the best possible solution for each patient.

Treatment time will vary as will the improvement of hair growth.  Consultation is imperative in order to begin treatment and halt hair falling as soon as possible.  Once treatment begins any remaining hair should be retained.  After review at six months’, there will be an assessment to review further treatments.
