If you've been researching treatments for thinning hair, you've probably come across scalp microneedling.


It's becoming an increasingly talked-about addition to hair-loss treatment protocols, and emerging clinical evidence suggests that microneedling may support hair regrowth, particularly when used alongside established treatments such as topical Minoxidil.

What Is Scalp Microneedling?

Scalp microneedling is a minimally invasive treatment that uses very fine, medical-grade needles to create controlled micro-injuries in the scalp.


Although the idea of deliberately creating tiny punctures in your scalp might sound daunting, the treatment is carefully controlled and performed at a specific depth appropriate to the treatment protocol.


For hair-loss treatment, microneedling may be performed at depths of around 1.5 mm, depending on the individual, the device being used and the clinical approach.

The objective isn't simply to exfoliate or refresh the surface of the scalp.


The treatment is designed to stimulate biological processes deeper within the skin and create a wound-healing response that may support the hair follicle environment.

Why the depth matters

The hair follicle is a complex biological structure.


Within and around the follicle are important cells and structures involved in regulating hair growth, including the **dermal papilla** and regions containing hair follicle stem cells.



By creating controlled micro-injuries at an appropriate depth, microneedling may stimulate signalling processes involved in tissue repair and follicular activity.

What Happens During Microneedling?

Before treatment, the scalp is assessed to determine whether microneedling is appropriate for you.


Where suitable, a topical anaesthetic may be used to improve comfort during treatment.


The microneedling device is then passed systematically across the scalp, creating tiny controlled channels.

Depending on the treatment protocol, a mesotherapy or topical serum may also be incorporated into the treatment.


The aim is to support the scalp environment while the skin's natural repair mechanisms are activated.


The result is not an instant transformation.


Instead, microneedling is designed to encourage a series of biological responses that may support healthier hair growth over time.

The Science Behind the Needles

So how can something as simple as tiny controlled punctures potentially influence hair growth?


The complete mechanism isn't yet understood.


However, researchers believe several biological processes may be involved.


When the skin experiences a controlled micro-injury, it activates its natural wound-healing response.


This involves a complex cascade of cellular communication, inflammatory signalling and growth-factor activity.

Growth factors such as platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) and transforming growth factor (TGF) are involved in tissue repair and regeneration.


Cells including platelets and fibroblasts also play important roles in the healing response.


Fibroblasts, for example, contribute to the production and remodelling of collagen and other components of the extracellular matrix.


This controlled healing response may help create an environment that supports follicular activity.

Three Potential Ways Microneedling May Help Hair

1. It stimulates the scalp's healing response


The controlled micro-injuries encourage the skin to activate repair mechanisms involving growth factors, cellular signalling and tissue remodelling.


2. It may improve the follicular environment


The biological response to treatment may support the environment around weakened or miniaturised follicles.

3. It can increase topical absorption


The temporary micro-channels created by microneedling can increase penetration of topical substances through the skin.

However, increased absorption also means that topical products should only be used according to an appropriate clinical protocol. Applying products immediately after microneedling without professional guidance may cause irritation or unwanted absorption.

Microneedling and Minoxidil

One of the most interesting aspects of scalp microneedling is its potential role as a combination treatment.


Research has investigated microneedling alongside topical Minoxidil, with several studies reporting greater improvement in hair-growth measures compared with Minoxidil alone.


This doesn't mean microneedling replaces Minoxidil.


Rather, it may work as a co-therapy within a broader treatment plan.

The combination is particularly interesting because microneedling may influence the scalp biologically while also temporarily increasing transdermal penetration.


However, treatment timing and product application matter.


Minoxidil or other topical products should not automatically be applied immediately after microneedling simply because absorption is increased.


A qualified practitioner should determine the appropriate protocol for the individual.

Who Could Benefit From Scalp Microneedling?

Microneedling isn't suitable for every type of hair loss, and the evidence isn't equally strong for every condition.


Research has particularly focused on:


Androgenetic Alopecia

Also known as male or female pattern hair loss, androgenetic alopecia is one of the main areas in which microneedling has been studied.


The treatment may be particularly useful as an adjunct to established therapies rather than as a standalone solution.


Alopecia Areata

Microneedling has also been investigated in alopecia areata, a condition that can cause patchy hair loss.


However, alopecia areata is an autoimmune condition and requires proper diagnosis and management. Microneedling should not be considered a universal treatment for the condition.

Telogen Effluvium

There is interest in whether microneedling may have a role in some cases of persistent or chronic telogen effluvium.


However, the evidence here is considerably less established.


Importantly, telogen effluvium can have many underlying triggers - including illness, nutritional problems, hormonal changes and physiological stress, so identifying and addressing the underlying cause remains essential.
