As hair becomes thinner, the parting can gradually appear wider because more scalp becomes visible.

In suitable cases, diffuse SMP can reduce the contrast between the scalp and surrounding hair, helping the parting appear less prominent.

The treatment is designed to complement your existing hair rather than replace it.

Thinning around the crown can make the scalp increasingly visible, particularly under bright lighting or when the hair becomes wet.

Suitability depends on your existing hair density, the extent and cause of the thinning, your hairstyle and the condition of your scalp.

Traction alopecia can develop when repeated tension is placed on the hair and scalp.

Braids, extensions, wigs, weaves and other tight hairstyles may contribute to thinning around the hairline and temples.

For people with suitable areas of established hair loss, SMP may be considered as a cosmetic camouflage option.

It can help reduce the visibility of the scalp and create the appearance of a more defined hairline.

However, SMP does not reverse traction alopecia or repair damaged hair follicles.

If your hair loss is ongoing, it is important to address the underlying cause before considering cosmetic camouflage.

Some forms of hair loss can cause scarring and permanent changes to the scalp.

Central centrifugal cicatricial alopecia (CCCA), for example, is a form of scarring hair loss that commonly affects Black women and can involve the crown or central scalp.

If you have suspected or active scarring alopecia, the condition should be properly assessed before considering SMP.

Once the scalp has been appropriately assessed and, where possible, stabilised, cosmetic camouflage may be considered in selected cases.

SMP can sometimes help reduce the visibility of healed scars, but it is not a treatment for the underlying scarring condition.

SMP can also be considered following a hair transplant where some areas remain visibly less dense than desired.

In selected cases, SMP can reduce the visual contrast between the scalp and transplanted or existing hair, helping create the appearance of greater density.

This may be particularly useful where further grafts are not available or where additional surgery is not preferred.

A consultation is required to determine whether SMP is appropriate following a transplant.
